Dear Cornerstone Family,
It seems our culture shows little respect or honor towards our elderly. Sitcoms and Facebook are filled with disrespectful sceneries and comments, especially towards parents. We need to teach our children about honor while they are young. Could this lack of honor to our parents be the foundation of why there are so much disrespect and dishonor in the world?
Ephesians 6:1-3 (NLT2) teaches us, “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” Paul reminds us to honor our parents throughout our lives. This is one of the Ten Commandments.
If we want the next generation to learn what honor means, then we need to set an example by demonstrating honor to our parents. Sometimes we take our parents for granted and just assume that they are okay, and we neglect to be present in their lives. Instead of seeing them as a burden or an inconvenience, we need to see the privilege and responsibility of caring for them in their senior years.
This can be difficult for some because of past abuse, neglect, unrealistic expectations, things they have said and done that have left us deeply wounded. There are no perfect parents except for God. We don’t have to excuse or minimize the hurt from the past, but we don’t have to let it keep us captive either. Today, we can choose to forgive and release them into the hands of God because He is the ultimate judge. We can honor our parents by extending grace and forgiveness.
Ephesians 4:32 (NLT2) teaches us to, “Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” We forgive because God has forgiven us more than we could ever repay.

Family Night:
It’s been fun meeting new people at Family Night, we encourage you to check it out! We gather every Tuesday from 6-7:30 pm. All ages-everyone welcome! We meet in the café for dinner, worship together, then break into small groups. The kids are in age-appropriate groups that include study and activities. Childcare for ages 0-3 provided.
